Connect With Your Ancestors | Full Moon & Equinox Sangria Ceremony

Happy Full Moon & Autumn Season!

Connect With Your Ancestors | Full Moon & Equinox Sangria Ceremony | Spirit de la Lune

This is the first Full Moon of the Autumn Season for the Northern Hemisphere.

It seems we are all looking forward to the colder weather and the return of the spirit world.

The veil begins to thin around the Autumn Equinox, being at it’s thinnest during Samhain.

Some will be experience the Full Moon in Pisces on Sept. 24th, and some Sept. 25th in the sign of Aries. This is a “cusp” Full Moon, between the elements, water and fire are emotional and passionate

So there may be a level of drama you aren’t quite expecting. This is a very transitional and intentse time for many.

The card that was pulled for this cycle during last New Moon’s post was Taurus: The Lover. A wonderful reminder for this season, especially because we are in the Shadow Period of a Venus Retrograde.

Venus is the Goddess of love and relationships, so when retrograde, relationships might be tested. The retrograde will take place in the sign of Scorpio, ruler of sex, death and taboo, so expect Venus goes retrograde from October 5th - November 15th.

“You may be confronted with obstacles that keep you from focusing on what you love to do. Let Taurus be a reminder to focus on love this Full Moon. Let yourself be immersed in love, self-care, focus on healing family trauma (look out for an amazing tarot/oracle spread to connect with your ancestors for our Full Moon post!)... get clear about what is worthy of your time and energy... love is always a worthy endeavor. Whether it's the love you have for your family and friends, yourself, or a project near and dear to your heart, or all of the above. Focus on love.” (From the New Moon Energy Report)

For this Full Moon and Autumn Equinox we have a two part ritual for tonight. The veil between world is thinning, and our ancestors and lineage have the opportunity to speak to us and visit with us. What do they have to say?

Ancestor Spread

From Marissa Moondaughter

Before beginning, do what you need to do to get into a grounded, meditative state. This could be a ritual bath, deep breathing, setting up an ancestor altar, or meditation. Surround yourself with white light to protect your energy while you contact the Spirit world. Make it very clear you are only contacting your lineage and malevolent spirits and energies are not welcome in your circle. Pour a glass of Underworld sangria for yourself and your ancestors!

Connect With Your Ancestors | Full Moon & Equinox Sangria Ceremony | Spirit de la Lune

We created this ancestor spread for this time of year, when the veil begins to thin between our world and the spirit world. As we get closer to Samhain, or Halloween, the veil is the thinnest to connect with spirits who have passed. This spread can be done if you do not know much about your roots, or even if you do! It can also be done any time to feel more connected to your ancestral roots.

In the center of your spread set up any items that represent your family or past loved ones. This could be pictures, jewelry, or items past down. It could be a family crest. Put whatever it is that makes you feel more connected to your family. If you do not have objects, write your intentions for this reading, or any questions you have for your ancestors.

Light a candle, or incense as an offering, and say something like this:

"As the veil thins, I invite my ancestors/elders, (feel free to name specific people) into this circle. I ask for your guidance and blessings. I am open to any messages you have for me. Thank you for supporting our lineage with your wisdom and teachings."

The bottom 6 cards that are facing upward are 6 Major Arcana cards, of your choice, to represent certain family members, or certain archetypes you wish to communicate with. These are the cards we chose, but feel free to choose other ones that resonate with you more

Connect With Your Ancestors | Full Moon & Equinox Sangria Ceremony | Spirit de la Lune

1. and 2. represent the ancient teachings and foundations for your roots; this can go back to ancient times.

3. and 4. represent your recently deceased elders, grandparents, uncles and aunts, parents -- the mother/father figures in your line.

5. and 6. represent the teachers, healers, and initiators of your traditions - they are the gatekeepers of the spiritual wisdom of your kin.

1. Star

2. Moon

3. Emperor

4. Empress

5. Hierophant

6. High Priestess

I tried to choose Yin and Yang complementary figures for each position since I am not very connected to my lineage. Each card you place on top is the message and teaching they have for you.

Before you choose the top card for each position, visualize the person or archetype in front of you and ask your question, or say hello. How do they respond to you? What is their expression or mannerisms? Then draw the card and proceed with your reading.

When you finish your reading, thank them for being with you tonight. When you sleep do not be surprised if your dreams have your ancestors in them. Pay attention and see what other messages they have for you.

Remember to be gentle with yourself. Lineage/ancestor work is very powerful and emotional. If you do not feel connected, do not feel discouraged. Allow this reading to be the knock on the door – let your ancestors know you are open to them and wish to build a relationship with them.

A great way to build a relationship with your ancestors is through leaving an offering on your altar. You can choose to leave a note, a picture, a candle or an offering of food. In the spirit of the season we are creating a Pomegranate Sangria- as an offering to the underworld and our ancestors.

Underworld Pomegranate Sangria

Brew your own spirits

Connect With Your Ancestors | Full Moon & Equinox Sangria Ceremony | Spirit de la Lune

There is a reason brews are called "spirits." For thousands of years our ancestors have left offerings of libations to their ancestors and the spirit world. They would pour their Mead, or ale, or wine on to the earth so their late loved ones could still enjoy the brews they loved while they were alive.

Before you invoke your ancestors and try our ancestor spread, brew this amazing recipe to invoke the Queen of the Underworld, Persephone, and make sure to pour a glass for your ancestors. Alcohol is optional in this recipe.

Underworld Pomegranate Sangria:

2 parts Pomegranate juice

1 part apple cider (or the whole bottle if you are not using alcohol)

1/2 cup Brandy (optional)

1 bottle of fruity red wine (optional)

Dash of cinnamon

Pomegranate seeds

Apple slices (slice horizontally so you can see the pentacle)

Blood red orange slices

Blueberries (frozen are great to use)

Any other seasonal fruit

Combine all ingredients into a big pitcher and let it sit under the moonlight for an hour, and then transfer to the fridge for at least another 1-2 hours.

Pour a glass for your ancestors while you do the the ancestor spread, and pour a glass into your garden as an offering to the spirit world.

Add a cinnamon stick into your glass and enjoy!

Don’t forget to share some with your loved ones as well. The card pulled for this week is the Lovers card and with Venus going retrograde in Scorpio we could all use some.

This Sangria would be a great addition to a Full Moon Sistar Circle or Mabon celebration you might hold!

Blood Moon - Spirit de la lune Full Moon Ceremony

The nights are getting longer as the darkness of the Autumn Season is settling in.

Tonight's Full Blood Moon takes place in the fiery sign of Aries. Aries is an active and energetic sign exuding confidence and needing expression. This week the past may be stirred up as the full moon is currently squaring Pluto, which could cause some old unhealed wounds to come back to the surface to be re-examined and healed.

Venus and Mars is conjunct in Virgo today, an occurrence that hasn't been seen since 2015. This could mean some major cycles in your relationship are ending, and a sense of balance is being restored or healed in your life.

These are pretty intense and dynamic times. The recent events in America, paired with the full moon energy may be causing conflicted and intense emotions within many. Especially if you are an empath.

The cycle presented to us on the last new moon was one of healing. And while the term healing often makes us think of rest and relaxation, this full moon is asking us to take action towards that healing.

Our card pulled for this cycle was the "Create" card, which seems fitting for our current energy. There is a lot of energy wanting to get moving and it is needing to be expressed in some way.

Tonight's Full Moon ceremony taps into the creative energy.

Creating Your Own Moondala

Making Your Own Moondala Mandala | Spirit de la Lune

Mandala making is a very powerful creative meditation. It not only helps you slow down and sooth your mind, but it can show you powerful truths about yourself. You can even set an intention before beginning a mandala to help further intensify the energy behind it.

The Major Arcana cards of the Spirit de la Lune deck feature Mandalas. Mandalas contain images, colors and symbols to help spark your intuition or sooth your soul. The motion of creating in a circle is very natural and soothing to us as the circular shape is inherently harmonious.

The cards are meant to unlock your intuition and spark insight, but creating your own mandala can be also helpful for your own soul's healing. You do not have to be a good artist to create a mandala! Mandalas are a sacred space, most often a simple circle that reveals inner truth about you and the world around you.

Follow the simple steps below to create your very own Moondala!

Finding Your Inspiration

The first part of this ceremony includes a reading to gather insight and information for your moondala. Organize your Spirit de la Lune deck (or which ever deck you are using), separate the Moondala cards from the phase cards and pull a reading of 3-5 cards using the major arcana cards, and one card from the Minor Arcana.

Spirit de la Lune Blood Moon Full Moon Reading

I chose 3 moondalas and 1 Phase card for this ceremony. 3 Moondalas full of symbols, colors and images for inspiration, and 1 phase card for the overall central theme.

Don't worry too much about a spread. For this ceremony we are just looking at the symbols, colors and themes that stand out the most to you.

Looking at the cards in front of you, see if you can find an overall theme or lesson for your mandala. Begin to notice elements from each of the cards. Look at the small details, the shapes, petals, or symbols within the card.

Take notice of the colors you see as well, and how it makes you feel.

Set aside these cards for inspiration for your mandala. You can take elements of each of these mandalas and combine them into your very own Moondala.

Making a Mandala

Here's what you need:

Circles to trace: Tape, lips, plates, cups all work! (Or a handy-dandy circle maker (found at Hobby Lobby))

Coloring tools (I chose watercolor)

There are many many ways to make a mandala. This is the process that I used to create the Moondala cards in Spirit de la Lune. It's simple, fun and meditative.

You can set an intention before you begin creating your mandala, but you do NOT have to know what your moondala will look like before you begin. In fact, I rarely ever do. This is expression, don't plan it out or think about it too much.

1.  Trace the outer circle. You can use a small dinner plate, or a bowl to help create your outer circle.

2. Find the center of your circle using a ruler. Make a small dot right in the center for your reference point.

3. From the center of the circle, begin to trace your other circles, working your way from small to large. Be sure each circle is centered. Using tape rings, or lids is helpful so you can see where the center is at.

For variation in your Moondala, stagger the spacing of the rings.

4. Take your ruler, and draw a light line through the center of the circle, and segment it out a few times.

I divided mine into 8 sections. You can do as many or as little as you would like! The more segments - the more detailed your mandala will be.

5. Add your center symbol.

The image in the center of the mandala often represents the overall theme of a mandala.

Look back over your cards and find the symbol you want to use for your theme and center point.

I chose to use the phase card that I pulled as the center of the Mandala. You can add any element you would like from your reading to the center.

6. Now is the time to set your intention as you draw some of the shapes found in the cards. You may helpful insights as you begin creating and filling in the designs on your mandala.

Create your own Moondala Mandala | Spirit de la Lune

Using your other cards, begin to fill in the "bullseye/grid" with elements from your cards that you feel speak the most to you.

Many of the cards have simple shapes, like triangles, circles or half circles/petals.

Use the guides and the grid to help keep your mandala centered and balanced as you fill in your details.

Don't worry about perfection! I'm sure that if you look too closely at the cards, you'll find many imperfections. That's often the beauty of creating.

Allow yourself to feel into the flow of creating. Let things come to you. If you want to add something to your mandala that isn't from your cards, go for it!

As you work on your mandala, remember to work in a circle. Start from the center and work your way towards the edges. Rotate your page, or physically move around it. Let yourself feel that circular energy as your focus goes within and around the circle you are creating.

Mandalas will draw you inward as you work on them. The are innately introspective shapes. Allow yourself to get lost in the shapes you are drawing. Ask yourself why you chose to draw petals, or stars. Ask yourself what the meaning behind this mandala may be.

Once you have the drawing of your mandala done, it's time to add color!

Create your own Moondala Mandala | Spirit de la Lune

I chose to paint mine with watercolor since that's my favorite medium and what I originally did the deck in. Choose whatever medium you feel most comfortable with. Colored pencil, or marker would look great!

Take time to work from the center out again. And be mindful of your color choice. Work with the colors from your reading if you can't think of what colors to use. Ask yourself why you are drawn to the colors you are. Colors also hold many meanings!

The final step is to line your final Moondala in pen. I use Micron art pens, but any pen would work! This is the final step that give it that completed Moondala Feel.

This is a good time to fill in any last minute details or embellishments on your mandala. The black lining really helps things pop and stand out.

When your Moondala is complete, set up a crystal grid over it and set it under the Full Moon to activate it. You can hang your moondala in your home, use it as an altar piece, or do what Tibetan monks do with their completed mandalas- destroy them.

But I prefer to keep mine.

Mandalas are a meditative art form, and can take quite a bit of time if you choose to do a large one. We would LOVE to see any mandalas you create with us tonight on this Full Moon in Aries.

October Blood Moon Ceremony: Invoking Ancestors

Happy Full Moon!

Full Moon

This Full Blood Moon in Aries reminds us that winter is right around the corner. The nights are growing colder and crisper. We are beginning to prepare for our rebirth.

Samhain is coming up, reminding us of the coming changes in the air. This full moon also marks the time of the year when the veil is the thinnest.

The Blood Moon is also known as the Hunter's Moon, and Shedding Moon. This marks a turning point in the year, when the Earth begins to experience the transformation powers of the darkness.

Blood Moon

We don't have to navigate the darkness alone.

Many believe that our loved ones do not actually die or disappear; but instead ascend to another realm.

They gain a new perspective and from there, they are able to help and assist us on our path.

As the veil thins this month, a gateway between realms is opened. Though our ancestors and guides walk with us daily, they are easily felt this time of year.

It's important to create a safe and sacred place for your guides to dwell in order to work with you. Creating a sacred space for ancestry and spirit guide work allows you to make a stronger and safer connection to the other side.

Inviting your loved ones in also creates protection around you and your home during this time, and allows you to better know those in your blood line.

This Blood Moon Ceremony allows us to open that safe and sacred space.

Blood Moon | Spirit de la Lune

Invoking Ancestors Altar

Ancestor altars help call in, and ground spirits. This acts as a safe anchor to our realm. Much like a Spirit Vessel in Root Work, this Ancestor Altar and Spirit Guide ritual can help you work with spirits in a safe, positive and grounded way.

SweetGrass | Spirit de la lune

You will need:

A white or black altar cloth to provide protection and purity.

A chalice or bottle of blessed or spring water, coffee or other liquid your ancestor may like, and to represent the element of water.

Ritual Items

A bowl of sand, salt or graveyard dirt to help ground your Spirit guides and Ancestors, and to represent the element of Earth.

Red, black and/or white candles to light the way to your home, and to represent the element of Fire. You use as many candles as you'd like for this ritual.

Spirit de la Lune Ancestor Altar Supplies

Sweet Grass or incense to cleanse and purify your space and evoke Goddess energy of protection, and to represent the elements of Air.

Quartz Crystal to amplify and act as a vessel and safe container for the energy and wisdom your Spirit Guides and Ancestors can offer.

Pictures, photographs, sentimental items, or intuitive items you feel called to. If you don't have any items from your loved ones, you can simply write their name on a piece of paper. If you have ancestors from a certain culture you'd like to call in, you may use a cultural, symbolic items as well. If you feel drawn to a past life you, you can use items and symbols to help build a stronger connection.

Begin setting up your altar

On a flat surface, begin setting up your altar. You can use your intuition to set up the altar in any way that is pleasing to you, or you can honor the elements by placing them in their directions. The directions and elements may vary depending on location, culture and different studies. For this altar, we followed: East- Air, South-Fire, West- Water,  North - Earth

Altar | Spirit de la Lune

An altar cloth as a back drop, or as a table cloth for your altar can help set sacred space, while protecting your surface from candle wax. For this ritual, we used the Wild Unknown Spirit Cloth as a back drop to our altar to set sacred space.

Choose a placement that is meaningful and beautiful to you, but try to keep the photos and ancestor items in the middle of the altar along with the quartz crystal(s).

If you'd like, you can place a ring of white candles around your ancestor items for extra protection. (It's not necessary to light the candles quite yet.)

Once your altar is set up, dim some lights, turn on some soft music and set the mood.

Relax and ground yourself. Get into a meditative and mindful space to open the circle.

Facing your altar, and preferably east, repeat,

"I open and consecrate this altar to the power of the ancient ones, my ancestors and Spirit Guides, here they may manifest and bless this home. May the ancient ones help protect us on this journey." Envision a warm circle of light drawn on the floor surrounding you and your altar, getting bright and stronger as you evoke each element.

Burning Sweetgrass | Spirit de la lune

Light your sweet grass or incense, "Great Spirit of the East, bless this swirling smoke, the power of air and wisdom; that I may always listen to the winds that carry the voices of the ancient ones."

Element of fire

Light your candles, "Great Spirit of the South, bless this burning flame, that it may light the way for my ancestors and guides, and show me clarity on my path. May I always remember the eternal fire that burns within every being."

Element of Water

Hold or pour your liquid into the chalice, "Great Mother Spirit of the West, bless this cleansing water, provide me clarity on my path, that I may remember the waters of rebirth."

Graveyard Dirt | Spirit de la Lune

Running your hands through the sand/dirt/salt say, "Great Mother of the North, bless this Earth, to ground, protect and nourish, may I remember and honor Mother Earth in her many forms."

altar items

Envision the circle of light surrounding you, growing larger, brighter and warmer.

Place your hands over the altar, and call in your ancestors by name if you know them.  Allow yourself  a moment to feel into Spirit.

"From East to South, and North to West, I call in my ancestors, to protect and bless.

Between worlds I stand, with protection at hand.

With hands steadfast, my circle is cast."

Your Quartz crystal can act as a vessel for your guides to anchor to as well. You can take this crystal with you throughout your day, returning the crystal at night to be recharged on the altar if you'd like.

Allowing and welcoming spirit

You may not feel anyone or anything at first, allow your altar to stay up and open to their visits throughout the coming months.

Working with Spirit Guides and Ancestors can require the practice of listening to your own intuition and developing your inner voice first. This ceremony can help you tune into Spirit the longer it stays up.

You can relight or replace the candle at any time. Practice safety, and don't allow candles to burn unsupervised.

Welcoming ancestors Spirit de la Lune

When you are ready to take the altar down, remember to thank your ancestors and guides for the visit. Be mindful and thankful to each element that worked in building their safe space.

To close the circle, take down the elements in reverse order, giving proper thanks for the help they provided.

Closing your circle and saging/smudging your home after taking down the altar can help clear and cleanse your energy.

There are many ways to officially close the circle, when your items are taken down you can repeat this powerful closing.

"May the circle be open, yet remain unbroken, May the love of the Goddess be ever in your heart. Merry meet and merry part, and merry meet again."
